Thursday 3 August. Builth to Llyswen.

We left our B&B, The Cedars, at 9:20 am on a dull and overcast morning. The initial walk was uphill, at first through housing, then on a quiet country road, but with views restricted by hedges. Near the top of the hill rain could be seen in the distance.

We walked down the hill to the river Duhonw river, crossing it by a small bridge. At this point the weather started to deteriorate. Rain started and the wind got up as we climbed our big hills for the day. The path was initially like a small stream bed. Half way up, on meeting  a road, the path turned left around 3 sides of a square before joining the road again. The view was mostly obstructed by hazel hedges whilst the pathway was obstructed by bracken.

The path returned to the road and headed up for the heathland where the views were better. The wind was very strong but the rain eased as we skirted below the summits of Pant-y-Llyn and Banc y Celyn (~470m).

The path descended steeply to join the road down to the river Fernant. Again only occasional views we possible because of vegetation.

We cossed the stream by a small bridge and made our last climb of the day before descending to a bridge over the Wye just north of Erwood.

The path then continued down the East bank of the Wye, on an old railway bed, now reasonably busy and FAST road returning to the west bank via a 'bendy' bridge.

The route then followed the river bank all the way to the bridge at Llyswen. The weather, which had improved for the descent deteriorated and we had to don wet weather gear for our walk to the Oakfield B&B. It was a long tiring day, ~8 hours. Are we enjoying ourselves yet?
